Expanded Form

Putting the face and place values together gives us the total value a number represents. If we dissect a number into its face and place values, this is called the expanded form of a number. For instance,

5,602 = (5 x 1000) + (6 x 100) + (0 x 10) + (2 x 1)

or

32,490 = (3 x 104) + (2 x 103) + (4 x 102) + (9 x 101) + (0 x 100)

This describes the number as the sum of each face value multiplied by each place value.
