Goldilocks & the Three Bears

There are many versions of this classic tale, including Goldilocks and the Three Martians and an African-American version. In 1989, James Marshall received the Caldecott Medal for his version of the story. Whichever is your favorite, each one has the potential of engaging children in developing mathematical number sense.

Read the story and ask the children to discuss "just right" as compared to "too little" or "too big". Have the children draw or write about scenarios where a certain number, such as 4, is just right and where it is too big or too small.

Ask the children to think about the following questions:

Could you eat 32 peanuts? 32 hot dogs? 32 Cheerios?
