Industrial Engineering BS

Industrial Engineers apply science, mathematics, and engineering methods to complex system integration and operations. Because these systems are so large and complex, IEs need to have knowledge and skills in a wide variety of disciplines, the ability to work well with people, and a broad, systems perspective. Industrial engineers use their knowledge and skills to improve systematic processes through the use of statistical analysis, interpersonal communication, design, planning, quality control, operations management, computer simulation, and problem solving.  The Industrial Engineering curriculum prepares graduates to design, develop, implement, and improve integrated systems that include people, materials, information, equipment and energy. The curriculum includes in-depth instruction to accomplish the integration of systems using appropriate analytical, computational, and experimental practices.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) are statements that describe what graduates are expected to accomplish within a few years of graduation.

  1. Within one year of graduation from TAMU-CC, our graduates will be working in the industry, government, construction, or other professional services as industrial engineers, or will be pursuing graduate degrees in industrial engineering or post-baccalaureate degrees in other fields, such as law, business, or medicine.
  2. Within five years of graduation from TAMU-CC, our graduates will have
    1. advanced in their careers as indicated by obtaining promotions and positions of leadership, awards, recognition as subject matter experts, and/or registration as professional engineers or in other professional disciplines; or by entrepreneurial activities, products or processes developed, patents, and/or publications;
    2. demonstrated the ability to increase their knowledge and expertise through continuing education or advanced degrees; and
    3. contributed to the improvement of the profession and of society through research, national and/or international collaboration, and/or professional and public service including mentoring.

These objectives are consistent with the expectations of the accrediting organization of ABET.

Student Outcomes

As defined by ABET, “student outcomes describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. These relate to the knowledge, skills, and behaviors that students acquire as they progress through the program.”

  1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
First Year Students Applying

Submit application via the Office of Admissions (https://admissions.tamucc.edu/freshman/), following all established guidelines and selecting Industrial Engineering (IEEN) as your declared major.

Admission to the major is competitive. Applications will be evaluated by a departmental selection committee for eligibility. Students will be notified by the program of their acceptance or denial. Students who are not selected by the committee for full acceptance into the Industrial Engineering program, but who are deemed to be good prospects for success in the program with additional leveling work will be accepted as "Pre-Industrial Engineering" students (PREI). These students will be assigned coursework for completion and subsequent re-evaluation by the IEEN selection committee.

Students who are not selected as IEEN majors will be asked to select another major to begin their academic careers.

Transfer Students Applying

Students may transfer to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi as either Freshmen Transfer students (less than 30 credit hours) or as standard transfer students (more than 30 credit hours). For admissions standards and instructions for these two groups please see the following websites:

Current TAMUCC Students Applying

Current Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi students wishing to change their major to Industrial Engineering (IEEN) should be aware that application to the major is competitive and a change of major application must be evaluated for eligibility. Current students will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • 2.5 GPA in all Engineering Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry, or Physics classes, as applicable (TAMUCC & Transfer)
  • 2.5 college (TAMUCC) overall GPA
  • Eligibility for Calculus I

Students will be notified by the Industrial Engineering Academic Advisor of their acceptance or denial. Students who are not selected by the committee for full acceptance into the Industrial Engineering program, but who are deemed to be good prospects for success in the program with additional leveling work will be accepted as "Pre-Industrial Engineering" students (PREI). These students will be assigned coursework for completion and subsequent re-evaluation by the IEEN selection committee.

Students who are not approved to change their majors to IEEN will remain in their originally declared majors and their Change of Major request will be nullified.

Current students approved to change their major to IEEN should be aware that not all courses will be applicable towards the Industrial Engineering degree plan.
